CHARACTERISTICS OF TIME

SPACE AND TIME IN OUR MIND

When we thought that a lot of things are transpiring and occurring on this planet, especially within our constriction of consciousness–our daily life, family, work, money, politics, and ultimately our concern about how we can continue to keep on surviving, we are being forgetful that these are only matters that form parts of the ecosystem of our planet Earth. Some of us might even feel as if we are the centre of the universe, and nothing else outside this earth is meaningful or significant. Either we realize it or not, there are countless of inexplicable things even on this Earth considered as ‘wonders’ that are beyond our limited physical, intellectual, and emotional capacity, and are yet to be accessed, discovered, endeavoured, or unveiled in the future, hopefully. Being human, somehow we only prioritize and are concerned about the things that revolve around us within our experience there’s no doubt about it. While experience is commonly achieved through dealing or handling things that are available at hand, this common situation has somewhat blindfolded us and prevented us from looking at other creations that exist, which might not have any impact on our lives at first-hand in a particular way –not to mention the elements which are situated, located, or residing very far from our reach, such as the elements in space. The sheer vastness of space, furnished by zillions upon zillions interstellar in the many billion galactic spaces, is enough to get us nauseated whenever we even start thinking about its limitations or boundaries. Nonetheless, the experience of looking at them is definitely worthwhile to some extent in nonphysical or psychical ways, at least. To gaze at the stars in space, you lift up your head and raise your eyes heavenward from the ground on a clear night. In a certain sense, this act connotes reflecting, imagining, aiming high, paying attention, contemplating, or even praying. When we look at the stars, we ‘see’ ourselves from a distance. We borrow the ‘eyes’ of the stars to see how very far at a distance we are from them, and the gaze comes right back to us. Thus, we feel something we feel small compared to everything that we see in space, and the stars appear to be a wide array of twinkling white dots. Somehow, just through the experience of watching the stars, we feel connected to everything in space. Also, we get mesmerized or even sometimes terrified by this experience. Frequently, it is an indescribable experience that cannot be expressed literally or verbally.

This abstract nature of existence is what Lochaisong is trying to express in his oeuvre. The immensity of space reflects the immeasurable possibilities that could happen not only to us but also to every single thing in this universe. While we are bound to time, we are constantly moving into the unknown paths that will only be unveiled when the time comes. However, ultimately, this exhibition is perhaps a way for Lochaisong to contemplate the abstract, random and stochastic nature of the universe, and hence, this possibility leads us to ask ourselves about our own open-heartedness in accepting every possibility in life. ‘Characteristics of Time’ showcases a series of mesmerizing artworks representing the epitome of the stellar spaces accomplished by Lochaisong, with the aim that the viewers are immersed in it. The ambiguous dots of stars varying in their size and luminosity were created and joined in his artworks, which connote the sense of embracement of the complexity and the extreme nature of being. The works of Lochaisong also indicate the mysterious nature of existence, including the experience of life and death, the reality of good and bad, and the occurrences of the certain and the uncertain, some of which have become Lochaisong’s aspiration in the creation of his paintings. Lochaisong hopes to inspire the viewers to reflect upon the creation and existence of humans in relation to those of other beings a call that would propel us to embrace the inevitable evolution of the ever expanding world.
